POEM FOR ALLEN COHEN

by Mark Schwartz

Allen, during one of our last meetings
You asked me to find
That which has fallen
I looked around and found a purse
On the ground and said it must be that
You then told me to just mingle with the guests

Now, Allen, I have found that it is
You, who have fallen
Fallen past the the open readings
Fallen past the flowers you wrote about
Which sat on the table between us
Fallen past the rock concerts in Golden Gate Park
Fallen past the legacy of the Oracle

I wish it had been the Bush administration that had fallen
Or Reagan
Now with the silence
I only wish that I can hear you say
Just mingle among the guests.
