The
Matrix
3138
Filmore Street
In September 1965, this club ,formerly a pizza parlor became
the Marty Balin`s Matrix and a place for his new band to play. On
the very night they opened the band finally picked a name for themselves,
the Jefferson Airplane. About a year later they
were joined by Grace Slick from The Great Society.
All the great bands played
here. The Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company,
Quicksilver Messenger Service, Sopwith Camel, Country Joe and the
Fish, Steve Miller Blues Band.,Steppenwolf which was then called Sparrow,The
Doors, The Chamber Brothers, Electric Flag, Santana, It`s A Beautiful
Day, and The New Riders of the Purple Sage, The jam sessions were
fantastic. There was no better place to be. The music was intoxicating.
It was far out, man! The club closed in 1972.
The Matrix closed in 1972 but was brought back to life in 2001 with
a hip and futuristic twist that instantly became a favorite of San
Francisco's night owls.
