rare lightning

two poems by Tony Vaughan

CERTAIN JUBILATION

The animal wind

the unbroken light
shakes sound out of
a forest
& strikes a bitter heart
with rare lightning.

When a rooster talks to an elephant
certain jubilation occurs.

But when an enemy
listens quite freely
to an enemy,

even earthworms can have wings.

BEAUTIFUL LOST

Rabbits
& all the other holy animals.
What suffering
the creativity
a garden makes
in early May?
A crisis of spiritual experience
and a thunderbolt
deep in the earth:
     even a truculent spider
     dreaming lights
   --however dim--
might sacrifice a moment to
                              some kind of fun.
